DAISY DYER AT THE Daisy has been at the La Manga Club golf resort in Spain trying to qualify for entry to the European Ladies’ Golf Tour and Louella and I were delighted to be there to support her. As you can imagine this is a very tough task. There were 202 lady golfers attempting to secure their places in the qualifying competition, but first of all they had to pre-qualify. Pre-qualifying started on Sunday, 8th January and they were split into two groups and had to play four rounds over four days using both the North (par 71) and South (par 73) courses. The European Tour had set the course using some of the Ladies’ tees, and a mixture of the Mens’ white, yellow and blue tees. Only the top 35 from each group went through. Daisy, with Simon on her bag, was entered under Chigwell Golf Club and they both proudly wore Chigwell shirts (I have to confess Louella and I didn’t have one between us!). After the first day Daisy was in the top half of the results, 4 over par on the South Course, having dropped a shot at the last as the light faded and the temperature dropped. On day two Daisy played the North Course. A good round of 2 over par, including 3 birdies, moved her up to 29th. On the third day she played the South Course again and an early start was required – it was still dark as Daisy was warming up on the practice range. She had an excellent round of one over par including 4 birdies and was in 23rd place on her own overnight. The pressure and competition is immense and it was quite windy on the last day making clubbing really difficult, so unfortunately after a few dropped shots, Daisy’s challenge was over after her round on day four. She finished the competition +14 tied in 42nd place – still a very commendable attempt, missing the cut by only 2 shots and finishing in the top half. At all times Daisy was focused and determined with tremendous concentration and we were both extremely proud to watch her play amongst some very distinguished amateur golfers, who already have very impressive lists of accomplishments under their belts and Daisy finished ahead of some of these! Daisy was not out of place and I’m sure we all wish her success for the forthcoming season. |
